Bunker Gear Clean

The cleaning process of the PPE garment must take place before any repairs are possible. Bunker Gear Repair washes each garment by a wet-wash process that does not degrade the integrity of the protective properties of your bunker gear.  We use the Check6 Aerospace cleaning agent together with state of the art industrial-size washer/extractors to facilitate a deep clean procedure. The extractors utilize an electrically operated valve system, a fresh-water-flushing chemical manifold and a six liquid chemical injection point to ensure the best, strictly quality controlled wash.

In cases of severe contamination, you may contact us for a quote on specialized cleaning. If we can’t clean it, we don’t charge.

The cleaning process used by Bunker Gear Repair will not void any warranties on the PPE garment, and are all conducted within the specifications and regulations of the National Fire Protection Agency.

Bunker Gear Inspections

There are three levels of inspection that should take place and the Staff at Bunker Gear repair is trained and fully certified to conduct the following:

  1.  Routine Inspection
  2. Advanced Inspection
  3. Complete Liner Inspection

A routine inspection is generally conducted by the firefighter himself, this should occur as often as possible. The need to look for problems like as soiling, contamination, physical damage, damage to trim, or missing trim, missing stitches or loss of seam integrity.
Advanced inspection of bunker gear is governed by NFPA 1851 rules. This should be carried out once every six months. A certified third party should be used to inspect the PPE’s and this is where Bunker Gear Repair plays their part in the process.
All of the following procedures have to be followed during an advanced inspection, and the inspection must be carried out by fire department trained personnel or a certified Independent Service Provider such as Bunker Gear Repair:

  • Soiled PPE elements are required to be cleaned before inspection.
  • It is compulsory for all inspection findings to be documented.
  • All elements of routine inspection must be also followed.
  • Required tests to be conducted on PPE garment elements:
  • Light evaluation test of liners
  • Evaluation for leakage
  • Physical and thermal damage to be assessed
  • Missing hardware test
  • Moisture barrier integrity test
  • Seam integrity test
  • Material integrity test
  • label integrity test
  • Reflectivity test
  • Closure system test

The complete liner inspection of bunker gear that has been in use for more than three years must be conducted at least once a year.  The liner has to be separated from the main body of the garment to expose the hidden sides of the thermal liner and moisture barrier. A specialized investigation needs to be conducted on the liner to test the moisture barrier and the water penetration barrier has to be evaluated.

Bunker Gear Tracking

Bunker Gear Repair makes use of an advanced software program that is able to track and record the inspection, cleaning and repairs to bunker gear. This tracking process is key to working in accordance with NFPA 1851 standards. The tracking system will alert you as to when cleaning, maintenance, repair or replacement is required.
The Secure Asset Tracing System used, allows customers to follow the progress of their PPE’s through the cleaning, repair or inspection processes as they occur, from the time that the bunker gear is shipped until its return. The programs tracks and records all of the following important information:

· Name of bunker gear owner
